Have you ever stop to think why some of you clothes “feel” better than others? Yes, I meant “feel”. It isn’t about the color or the shape…is all about feelings!
There are two major types of fibers: natural fibers and synthetic ones. The natural fibers can be animal fibers (wool, mohair, cashmere, alpaca silk, alpaca) or vegetable fibers (cotton, linen).
The synthetic fibers (acrylic, polyester nylon) are producer with chemicals obtained from petroleum (like plastics). Some are produced to have some special features like: don’t burn; resists to chemicals; super strong; etc. The most common on knitting yarns is acrylic. It’s used to imitate natural fibers and sold as a substitute to wool (but it’s still plastic fibers, don’t forget). Most of the sweaters in the shops are 100% acrylic or acrylic/wool blend – because this fibers are more affordable (and this I don’t really understand, sorry).
But why does pure wool feels better than acrylic yarn?
Well, pure wool is more comfortable because is breathable (more effective than synthetics at absorbing sweat next to the skin and releasing it as vapor, keeping you cool and dry), has natural elasticity, is multi-climatic (is an active fiber reacting to body temperature changes, keeping you warm when your cold and releasing heat and moisture when your hot), natural odor reducing (absorbs moisture, reducing the amount of sweat left on the body, therefore reducing the amount of odor produced). And lets not forget that this is natural, biodegradable and renewable – good for our skin and good for the planet.
So, next time your of to buy a sweater, listen to your body feelings and choose you fibers wisely! 🙂
